5th Year Construction Trip

Mountlucas Wind Farm
St. Paul’s 5th year Construction students ventured on a unique experience to Bord Na Mona’s Wind farm in the Bog lands of Mountlucas in Co. Offaly on Friday the 12th of February. This was an extremely beneficial tour, conducted by the site manager Paul Greene who oversaw the complete development of the project.
The day consisted of an in-depth presentation of the complete workings of the wind turbines. Students were briefed on everything from the initial planning stage to the final cost of the Turbines when fully constructed.
After the presentation was complete, the bus followed a designated track where we got an up and close idea of the sheer size of the 28 wind turbines on the 1,100 hectares of cut away bog land. Standing at 100 metres in height with three 50m propellers each, it was an incredible spectacle to see and learn how they operate and the technology involved to keep them surprisingly quiet as they rotate.
This was a worthwhile trip that will live long in the memories of the group and of course no trip would be complete without a trademark Sean Foy selfie to remember the day!!
